Common questions

I made a scan searchable but searching still doesn't find it. Search only finds text that is really in the file. A scan is a photograph of a page until you run Searchable on it, which reads the page and adds a text layer. If you have run it and still can't find a word, the scan may be too faint or sideways — try rescanning it, or rotating it first.

Compress said the file would get bigger and didn't do anything. That is correct behaviour. A PDF made on a computer — a bank statement, something exported from Word — is already compact text, and flattening it into pictures of pages would only add bytes. Ream tells you rather than handing back a larger file and calling it compressed.

Is redaction really safe? Yes. Ream flattens each redacted page and removes the text underneath, so the words under the black box are gone from the file — not merely covered. Check it yourself: redact something, then search the document for the word.

I forgot a document's password. There is no way to recover it. Ream never keeps a copy of your password and there is no server that could hold one. A locked document whose password is lost cannot be opened, by us or by anyone.

Signing turned my document into a picture. It shouldn't — signing redraws the page and keeps its text selectable. If a signed document has lost its text, please get in touch.

I paid but the unlock isn't showing. Open the unlock screen and tap Restore purchase. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account, so a reinstall or a new device just needs a restore.

What is free, and what costs 99¢? Scanning, importing, merging, splitting, reordering, rotating and sharing are free and always will be, with no watermarks. The 99¢ unlock adds text recognition, compression, signing, redaction and password locking — once, not monthly.
